Ol Doinyo Lengai, meaning “Mountain of God” in the Maasai language, is a unique active volcano located in the Great Rift Valley. It stands at 2,962 meters (9,718 feet) and is famous for producing carbonatite lava, the coolest and fastest flowing lava in the world. The climb is challenging due to its steep slopes, loose volcanic ash, and extreme temperature changes, but the breathtaking sunrise views and crater landscapes make it a truly unforgettable experience
Distance: ~240 km | Drive Time ~6 hours Depart Arusha in a 4x4 safari vehicle, passing through Maasai villages and the Great Rift Valley. Stop for scenic photos and a quick snack break along the way. Afternoon: Arrive at Lake Natron – Check-in at your lodge or campsite. Explore Lake Natron – A stunning alkaline lake famous for millions of flamingos and its surreal red-colored water. Visit Ngare Sero Waterfalls – Enjoy a short hike to a hidden oasis with natural swimming pools. Evening: Early dinner and trek briefing from your guide. Rest and prepare gear* for the midnight climb. Overnight: Basic lodge/campsite near Ol Doinyo Lengai Meals: Lunch & Dinner
Trekking Duration: 7-10 hours (ascent & descent) Elevation Gain: ~1,600m (5,250 feet) Midnight: The Climb Begins 00:00 (Midnight) – Start the steep climb under the starry African sky. The trail is rocky, dusty, and requires endurance. 06:00 AM – Summit at Sunrise Enjoy breathtaking sunrise views over the Great Rift Valley, Serengeti, Mount Kilimanjaro, and Lake Natron. If lucky, see lava activity inside the crater. 07:00 AM – Begin Descent The descent is more difficult than the ascent due to loose volcanic ash and rocks. Trekking poles are useful here! 10:00 AM – Arrive at Base Camp Rest and enjoy a well-deserved breakfast*. Drive back to Arusha, with optional stops for photos or a Maasai village visit. Drop-off: Arusha (late afternoon/evening) Meals: Breakfast & Lunch
