The State Russian Museum is the largest collection of Russian art in the world. The main building of the museum is located in the Mikhailovsky Palace in the center of St. Petersburg.
The museum was created by personal decree of Emperor Nicholas II on April 13, 1895. The official opening of the museum took place on March 7, 1898.
Of particular note is the collection of icons in the section of ancient Russian art, which presents works by Andrei Rublev, Dionisy, Simon Ushakov and other remarkable Russian masters.
In the collection of works of fine art of the 18th - the first half of the 19th centuries, paintings by Fyodor Bruni, Karl Bryullov and Dmitry Levitsky make an unforgettable impression.
In the collection of the second half of the 19th century, it is difficult to look away from almost all the works, but I was most struck by the paintings of Ivan Aivazovsky, Ilya Repin, Viktor Vasnetsov and Vasily Surikov.
The collection of the late 19th century - early 20th century also has a whole scattering of wonderful works, but pay special attention to the works of Valentin Serov, Mikhail Vrubel, Konstantin Somov and Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin.
In general - go and enjoy the beautiful works of Russian art!

My rating doesn’t have much to do with museum itself but rather people working. Tickets were only available for 5pm with museum closing at 6pm. We came at 4:30pm and were lucky to get in.
Beautiful paintings by classic Russian artists: Shishkin, Surikov, Vasnetsov, Aivazovsky… At 5:43pm one of the attendants in the last halls on the first floor started yelling for everyone to get out as museum was closing. Just when I finally found Moonlit Night on the Dniepr by Kuindzhi - the continuous nagging didn’t let me to enjoy the painting for a minute. One of the other attendants switched the light off in her hall. Again, way before 6pm. Several were on their phones.
Very different experience from what I imagined when people are passionate about the art they work with and want to share that with the public.
If you go, go early to enjoy uninterrupted experience.
