The central region is so vast that wildlife can climb and play on the gong rock and admire the Maasai cave paintings of elephants, shields, and abstract patterns. Ngorongoro National Park stands out as the only park in Tanzania that offers a year-round opportunity to view the big five, possibly even in a single day. The park is renowned for its Maasai families who live in circular homesteads known as Bomas. Furthermore, the park is an excellent location to gain insight into early human evolution, pioneered by Mary and Louis Leakey. Wildlife sightings include wildebeest, gazelle, golden jackals, bat-eared foxes, hippopotamus, East African wild dogs, African leopards, ungulates, waterbucks, buffalo, and eland, among others. However, giraffes, oribi, topi, spotted hyenas, cheetahs, impalas, and some other wildlife are rarely seen in the park.
