This full-day excursion from Addis Ababa offers a mix of history, culture, nature, and breathtaking scenery. It is one of the most popular day trips from the capital, ideal for those seeking both spirituality and adventure.
In the morning, guests will be picked up from their hotel in Addis Ababa and driven north along the Addis–Gojjam road. The scenic drive passes through highland landscapes, small villages, and eucalyptus forests. After about two hours, the journey reaches the Debre Libanos Monastery, one of Ethiopia’s most important religious centers, founded in the 13th century by Saint Tekle Haymanot. Guests will explore the monastery compound, admire its beautiful stained-glass windows, and, if time permits, visit the nearby cave where the saint is believed to have prayed.
After visiting the monastery, the tour continues to the Portuguese Bridge, a stone arch dating back to the 16th century. From here, guests can enjoy stunning views of the Jemma River Gorge, a dramatic landscape often compared to a miniature Grand Canyon. A short walk to the viewpoint provides an excellent opportunity for photography, and if lucky, guests may also spot endemic wildlife such as Gelada baboons.
Lunch can be arranged at a local lodge overlooking the gorge or as a picnic in a scenic spot. In the afternoon, guests will drive back to Addis Ababa, arriving in the early evening.
