Theme: Exploring the Footprints of Orthodoxy in Tanzania: Faith, Culture, and Community
Focus: This tour is designed to provide a meaningful spiritual journey for Orthodox Christians, combining visits to Orthodox churches, monasteries (if any exist and are accessible), and community centers with opportunities for prayer, reflection, engagement with the local Orthodox community, and appreciation of Tanzania’s beauty.
Arrival at Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR). Private transfer to a comfortable hotel in Dar es Salaam (holiday inn, mid-range, offering a balance of comfort and value). Look for hotels near Orthodox churches, if possible. Welcome dinner and orientation.
Morning: Visit the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Dormition of Theotokos in Dar es Salaam. Attend the Divine Liturgy (if schedule permits, usually on Sundays) and meet with the priest or members of the congregation. Afternoon: Guided city tour, including historical sites and cultural landmarks. Visit the Askari Monument, the National Museum, and Kariakoo Market (a bustling local market). Evening: Evening prayer time or quiet reflection. Accommodation: Same hotel in Dar es Salaam.
Morning: Drive from Dar es Salaam to Tanga (approx. 5-6 hours). Tanga is a coastal city with historical ties to various cultures. Afternoon: Visit any historical churches in Tanga (Orthodox churches if possible, otherwise explore other denominations to understand religious diversity in Tanzania). Research beforehand. Explore the Tanga city and learn about its history. Evening: Reflection on the day’s experiences. Accommodation: Overnight in Tanga (Tanga Beach Resort, or similar).
Morning: Drive from Tanga to the Usambara Mountains (approx. 2-3 hours). This region offers stunning scenery and cultural experiences. Afternoon: Visit the villages and enjoy the scenic beauty. Engage with local communities. *Visit local orthodox chursches and communities within. Evening: Evening prayer or reflection time. Accommodation: Overnight in the Usambara Mountains (Lawns Hotel or similar guesthouse).
Morning: Travel to Arusha from Usambara (aprox. 6 hours). Afternoon: Afternoon: Check in to Hotel and visit the Greek Orthodox in Arusha and learn about its history. Meet the members and leadership of the church. Evening: Join for prayers at the church or nearby location Accommodation: Overnight in Arusha
Morning: Join on charity, learn about their experiences and history. Engage and listen to their stories. Bring donations, and if possible engage with communities. Afternoon: In Arusha engage with a specific community project (e.g., a women’s empowerment initiative or a program supporting vulnerable children) led by the Orthodox community, provide aid, engage and create friendships. Evening: Discuss with other people from the community, share stories. Accommodation: Overnight in Arusha (same hotel)
Morning: Drive from Arusha to Karatu, a town near the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (approx. 3 hours). Afternoon: Visit coffee plantations to learn the process, from crop to cup. If time permits, go to local village to learn their daily routines. Visit orthodox communities to discuss faith. Accommodation: Overnight in Karatu
Morning: Drive from Karatu to Dodoma by bus (approx 4 to 5 hours) Afternoon: Check in to the Holy Spirit Cathedral, Dodoma, and visit around and learn about its history. Evening: Farewell diner at the church or near area.
Morning: Early Morning transfer from Dodoma to Dar Es Salaam (approx. 6 hours) Afternoon: Transfer to Airport for departure.
