Take a sacred journey through Greece’s most significant Orthodox sites, walking in the footsteps of early Christianity and Byzantine heritage.
This pilgrimage blends spiritual reflection with breathtaking historical sites, offering a profound and enriching experience of Greece’s Orthodox legacy.
Depart from Athens and heading southwest towards the Corinth Canal. In our way, we will make a short stop at the Monastery of Daphni, a Unesco World Heritage Site. Our next stop, will be at the Corinth Canal which connects the Aegean Sea with the Ionian Sea. The main bridge offers a unique view of this monumental cutting that started as a thought in classical times and was finally completed in 1893. Then, we drive on and visit the ancient town of Corinth where Saint Paul lived, alongside Aquila and Priscilla, and preached for two years before leaving for Ephesus. We will stroll around the remains of the City, which include the Agora (market place) and Apollo’s temple (6th century B.C.) which clearly show how rich and important Corinth was in Ancient Times. Then, for our finals stop, we will visit the Ancient Port of Cehries, where Saint Paul disembarked to continue his preachings to Rome and Ephesus. We return to Athens in time for lunch.
On the second day of our journey, we will depart from Athens for Thessaloniki, a 4-5 hour drive, with a stop at Thermopylae to visit the monument dedicated to King Leonidas and learn about the famous Battle of Thermopylae. Afterward, we will continue our journey to Thessaloniki, where we’ll explore the city’s rich Byzantine heritage, starting with the Basilica of Saint Demetrius, Hagia Sophia, and other significant Byzantine churches. In the evening, we will visit the iconic White Tower and the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki, gaining insight into the city’s ancient history. We’ll stay overnight in Thessaloniki, resting and reflecting on the day’s discoveries.
The third day begins with a drive from Thessaloniki to Kavala, which takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours. Once in Kavala, we will visit the archaeological site of Philippi, where we’ll explore the city walls, the acropolis, the theater, the marketplace, Basilicas A and B, the octagonal temple, and the prison of St. Paul. Afterward, we will continue our journey to the ancient theater of Philippi, a well-preserved monument where we can enjoy sweeping views of the surrounding area from the stone seats. Our next stop takes us to the ancient city of Amfipolis, located near the Strymon River. Here, we’ll visit the city walls, the Lion of Amfipolis, and other notable monuments, before heading to the archaeological museum to further delve into its rich history. In Amfipolis, we will also visit the church dedicated to the Apostle Paul, who is believed to have passed through the city during his missionary journey. This site offers pilgrims a chance to reflect on the enduring message of hope and salvation that St. Paul spread. After visiting these remarkable sites, we will return to Thessaloniki for the night.
From Thessaloniki we depart and head towards Veria, a drive that takes about an hour and a half. Our first stop is Pavlia, the podium where St. Paul spoke in the Byzantine city of Veria. After this, we’ll embark on a walking tour through the historical center of Veria. The city, known for its picturesque streets, is home to forty-eight fully functional Byzantine churches. Our tour will start with the Church of St. Savvas (14th c.), followed by the Church of St. Vlassius (14th c.), the Church of Sts. Kerykos and Joulita (14th c.), the Church of Christ Saviour (14th c.), and the Church of St. Paraskeue (15th c.). Each church is a testament to the city’s rich Byzantine heritage. Our exploration continues as we visit the Jewish Barbouta Quarter in Veria. This historic neighborhood, located in the heart of the city, is steeped in Jewish heritage. We will wander through its narrow streets and discover the ancient synagogues that once served the vibrant Jewish community here. The synagogues offer a glimpse into the past, showcasing both their historical and architectural significance. After our tour, we head to Meteora, where we will spend the night.
We begin our fifth day with a tour of the monasteries of Meteora, making a detour to visit this significant site due to its proximity and importance along our route. Our tour starts with a visit to the Monastery of Rossano, one of the oldest and most remarkable in the region. Next, we head to the Monastery of St. Stephan, a stunning example of Byzantine architecture perched high among the rock formations. We will conclude our tour with a visit to the Monastery of Great Meteoron, the largest and most famous of the Meteora monasteries. Dedicated to the Transformation of the Savior, this monastery offers breathtaking views and a rich spiritual history, making it a fitting conclusion to our exploration of Meteora. In the afternoon, we begin our journey back to Athens, where we will spend the evening.
On the next day, we will explore the layers of Byzantine Athens that are still preserved within the historical core of Plaka. Our tour begins with a visit to the middle Byzantine church of the Virgin Pantanassa on Monastiraki Square (9th century), followed by the Virgin of Kapnikarea (11th century) and the Little Metropolis (12th century), which serves as an open museum for Byzantine sculpture. We will also visit the residence of St. Philothee, the protector of Athens from the 16th century, and the Glebe of the Holy Sepulcher, which receives the Holy Light from Jerusalem every year (16th century). In the afternoon, we will visit the Acropolis and the podium of St. Paul by Areios Pagos. Our focus will be on the conversion of the Parthenon into the Christian church of the Virgin Atheneiotissa and the early Christian communities in Athens. Overnight stay in Athens.
On the final day, we will have a relaxed morning, allowing time for any last-minute exploration or shopping in Athens. Whether you wish to revisit a favorite spot or pick up souvenirs, you’ll have the opportunity to enjoy the city one last time. Afterward, we will head to the airport for your departure, marking the end of this unforgettable journey through Greece
