With this 12 days tour you will embark for an unforgettable and rich adventure to the Darkhad Valley, west of the Huvsgul Lake. This is the land of Tsaatan people, reindeers herders, and of Shamans. During the summer, they move their camps higher in the mountains and we will have to ride horses to join them and spend some time in their camp. You will enjoy and admire the rich green steppes of the Northern regions of Mongolia, and the fresh waters of Lake Khuvsgul, Blue Pearl. And during the winter, they go down near the village and lake of Tsagaanuur.
In the morning, you’ll be greeted by our team at your hotel, and we will start our drive to the Amarbayasgalant monastery, the second largest monastery in Mongolia. It is located in the beautiful Iven Gol river valley at the foot of the Burenkhaan mountains. Amarbayasgalant is one of the few monasteries in Mongolia that has remained intact despite religious purges during the 1930s. The beauty, decorations, and construction of the monastery have made it one of the most magnificent architectural monuments in Mongolia. In 1990, communism had fallen and the people were eager to revive their religious tradition, so Amarbayasgalant was restored. Now it stands strong after 300 years of a persecuted history.
After an early breakfast, we will start driving to Ikh Uul, another town in the Khuvsgul province. We will drive through the Uran Togoo Mountain and stop for lunch to enjoy the landscape during our picnic. Continue the road trip to meet with our next hospitable host family/tent
Enjoy scenic driving through rural landscape to Lake Khuvsgul. Lake Khuvsgul is to the northwest, near the Russian border. Spreading 136 km long, 262 m deep and about 1100 m above sea level, it is the second largest freshwater lake in all of Asia. During the winter, the lake’s surface freezes over completely, becoming the focal point of the annual ice festival in early February. This festival, the taiga, and the Tsaatan (reindeer) people are the main attractions of the area. This peaceful spot is the right place to enjoy a well-deserved rest after long hours of scenic road tripping. Spend free time to exploring around the lake before dinner will be served.
Explore and enjoy lake Khuvsgul. Spend a peaceful day at the lake. Go swimming, hiking, horseback riding, and relax next to the vast blue lake.
Early after breakfast we will start our drive to Ulaan-Uul village. There is many rivers and mountains on the way, we will stop for taking pictures and have lunch on the way. After 6-7 hours of driving, we will reach the village of Ulaan-Uul and spend the night camping or in a host ger.
After breakfast, start driving to Tsagaanuur village. The scenery along the way is amazing with mountains and river in the Taiga, possibility to stop to take pictures. In Tsagaanuur, we will experience a Shaman ritual and learn about their roots and history. We can spend some time to rest or enjoy the lake and the surrounding areas. During the evening, you will be briefed for the next few days of horse riding.
Start of the horse-riding trip, drivers will stay in Tsagaanur with the cars and some of the unnecessary luggage. Horse riding for about 5 hours, stop for lunch break. Ride to the mountain area where the Tsaatan summer camps are, scenery and tundra area spectacular. Arrive in the teepee camp and spend the next 2 days with the Tsaatan community.
We will spend the next 2 days resting and spending time with the Tsaatan families and reindeer herders. We will experience their daily life and take part in their activities, milk the reindeers, cheese making… It’s possible to ride reindeers. We will also meet Tsaatan Shamans and learn their tradtions, they have their own religion, language, tradition, and customs that differ from other Mongols.
After 2 days immersed in the Tsaatan community, we will ride back to the Ulaan-Uul village.
We approach the end of our adventure, and it will be a long driving day back to Murun, near the Khuvsgul Lake. We will stop on the way for picnic lunch and for sightseeing and taking pictures. We will spend the night in one of Murun Hotel to enjoy a well-deserved rest after all our adventures. The next day, you will have your flight back to Ulaanbaatar.
After breakfast, our team will drive you to the Murun airport.
