Marangu Route – 5-Day Kilimanjaro Trek: The Classic Path to Africa’s Highest Peak
Embark on a once-in-a-lifetime adventure to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro via the Marangu Route, the most popular and comfortable path to the top of Africa. Known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” this trek offers huts for accommodation, making it the only route with dormitory-style shelters, perfect for those who prefer a warmer and more comfortable climb.
Over 5 incredible days, you’ll journey through lush rainforests, moorlands, and alpine deserts, finally reaching the iconic Uhuru Peak (5,895m), where breathtaking panoramic views await. With expert guides, delicious meals, and stunning scenery, this adventure is perfect for trekkers seeking a shorter, scenic, and well-supported climb.
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), you will be met by our representative and transferred to your hotel in Arusha or Moshi. In the evening, you will meet your mountain guide for a detailed briefing, gear check, and final preparations. Arrival Tip: We recommend arriving at least a day before the trek to allow time for rest and acclimatization.
After breakfast, we drive to Marangu Gate (1,870m), where we complete park registration and meet our trekking team. The trek begins through lush rainforests, with towering ficus trees, giant ferns, and occasional blue monkeys. After 4–5 hours of trekking, we arrive at Mandara Hut (2,720m), a cozy wooden hut with bunk beds. A short trek to Maundi Crater offers beautiful views of Kenya’s Amboseli National Park. - Elevation: 1,870m (6,135ft) → 2,720m (8,923ft) - Hiking Time: 4–5 hours - Distance: 8 km / 5 miles - Habitat: Montane Rainforest - Accommodation: Mandara Hut
We leave the rainforest behind and enter the moorland zone, with scenic views of Kibo and Mawenzi Peaks. The trail passes through giant lobelias and everlasting flowers, offering a unique alpine atmosphere. After about 5–6 hours of trekking, we reach Horombo Hut (3,720m), where trekkers from different routes converge. The hut provides incredible sunset views over the plains of Tanzania. - Elevation: 2,720m (8,923ft) → 3,720m (12,205ft) - Hiking Time: 5–6 hours - Distance: 12 km / 7.5 miles - Habitat: Moorland - Accommodation: Horombo Hut
Today’s trek is more challenging as we enter the alpine desert, crossing the Saddle between Kibo and Mawenzi Peaks. The trail is dry and barren, with strong winds and high altitude. We reach Kibo Hut (4,703m) in the afternoon, where we rest and have an early dinner before preparing for the midnight summit attempt*. Tip: Stay hydrated and rest well— summit night is the toughest part of the trek! - Elevation: 3,720m (12,205ft) → 4,703m (15,430ft) -Hiking Time: 5–6 hours - Distance:9 km / 5.6 miles - Habitat: Alpine Desert - Accommodation: Kibo Hut
Midnight Summit Attempt At midnight, we begin the final ascent to Uhuru Peak. The trail is steep and covered in loose volcanic scree. After 5–6 hours of slow, determined trekking, we reach Gilman’s Point (5,685m) on the crater rim. From here, another 1–2 hours of trekking leads to Uhuru Peak (5,895m)—the highest point in Africa! After celebrating and taking in the breathtaking sunrise views over glaciers and the African plains, we descend back to Kibo Hut for a short rest and then continue down to Horombo Hut. Achievement: You’ve officially conquered Mount Kilimanjaro! - Elevation: 4,703m (15,430ft) 5,895m (19,341ft) 3,720m (12,205ft) - Hiking Time: 12–14 hours (6–8 hours ascent, 6 hours descent) - Distance: 21 km / 13 miles - Habitat: Arctic Zone & Moorland - Accommodation: Horombo Hut
